Well, US Airways (US) has average customer reviews. Your issue might not be so much the airline itself, but rather PHL airport, which is recognized by frequent flyers to be one of the worst airports in the nation. When you land, be prepared for a LONG wait for your baggage at baggage claim. When you leave, expect gruff attitudes and a general sense of unfriendliness, from both the US staff and security.
If you can possibly do it, don't check your bags in and just do carryon.
Good luck.

I fly with USAirways all the time; 42 flights this year alone. And I have always been happy with them. I fly direct flights mostly, sometimes connecting flights, and the problems I have had with them have been few and far between. I've had a couple of delayed flights but that seems to be more related to my choice of travel time and not airline--- all of my delay issues have been flying into or out of Washington National on a Friday and that airport is a mess for all airlines on Fridays. More importantly, on the rare occasion something has gone wrong, their customer service has been quite good. I refuse to fly AA because their customer service sucks and I love USAir because their customer service is good. I do know the difference between stuff that they can control (overbooking, seat assignments, gate changes to some extent) and stuff that they can't (weather or traffic delays) and that helps get the right level of customer service.
No matter what airline you pick, you'll find people who adore them and people who hate them. All the US airlines have similar issues with overbooking, delays, mechanical issues, etc; there's no shining star in that department! But I think you will be just fine flying on USAir.
By the way, USAir lets you upgrade to First Class even if you're not a preferred traveller by paying a fee when you check in. Seats are not always available and not every ticket is eligible but it's worth asking about. For a flight that long I believe the fee would be $200 each way but that's way cheaper than a first class fare and on a long-haul flight it's totally worth it so ask about it!

I most definitely agree with the previous post. There's nothing especially bad or good about US Airways (although they have the highest % of lost luggage), it's really PHL that's the problem....it's just a poorly run airport with surly staff.

No. They should be just fine. Safety should be just fine, FAA has strict guidelines. Maybe the employees won't be nice or something, I don't know what you've been hearing bad.

The most important thing is that you say your prayers before you fly. Good luck!
