I understand what you mean and how you feel...however we just can't cook or eat them with the skin on. Ewww that would be nasty. But I learnt a useful trick when I was a kid...when you are peeling them and your eyes start burn and you are about to cry, turn the cold water tap on and look into the water for a few seconds (I'd say a good 20/30 seconds)as it is running...it eases the pain and the need to cry...I guess it is sort of calming, it works for me and all the people I have passed it on to. Do this as many times as you feel the need to.

Because the skins are tough and horrible.
Peel thinly, only taking off the outer skin.
Stand back when peeling and slicing onions, not with your face over them.

Well, duuuh, they are called for in many recipes. Besides it isn't the peeling that makes you "cry", but the actual cutting and chopping. Without onions many foods would be so dull...

I read somewhere tahat if you hold a wooden spoon in your mouth when you peel/cut onions, it will stop the tears.
I always wear swimmers no-fog goggles when I cut or peel onions, so I don't cry.

because they add favor to your food and they don't always make you cry it depends on how close your face is when you are cutting the onions. onions are use for cooking so everyone is still going to use them. It depends on the acidity of the onion that will also cause you to cry also.

If they are refrigerated before you peel them, they won't make you cry....it makes the sulphur compounds release more slowly (heat makes the chemical dissipate into the air faster).
We have to peel them because have to. The peel is inedible. It gives a burnt flavor to soups, and you can't chew it anyway.

if you didnt peel them then youd be eating a load of soil thats stuck to the onion, plus if you dont peel off the first two layers then youd be chewing dead skin, as ive never chewed dead skin i cant tell you what it would taste like, but i dont think it would taste very nice, as history predicts us id stick to the modern way of eating onions!!!!!

The Vapors get into your eye which is a foreign substance that isn't neutral to it. Slightly Freeze your onions beforehand in order to remove this effect.

there is a way of cutting them which doesn't make your eyes water...
You need to peel them cos the skin isn't for cooking. it's tasteless.
My eyes used to get watery when in a classroom of someone chopping one on the other side of the room.
