How do you like your job? How much demand is there for Chinese linguists? Can you enlist for four years? Is there anyone who would be willing to let me e-mail them?

And is there any sample D-lab test I can take, just to see how well I'd do? I got a 99 on the AFQT, but I don't know if that would mean I'd get a qualifying DLAB score.

1. i like my job okay. i joined for language school more than for the job itself. it's one of those things where it sounds like you're doing all sorts of interesting, top-secret stuff with cool equipment, when in actuality you end up doing a pretty boring job, albeit still involving top-secret stuff and fairly cool equipment. the linguist job varies from branch to branch and even within branches, though, so you never know.

2. there is a fair demand for chinese linguists--not as much as for, say, arabic or korean linguists, but more than for french or german. do you already know chinese or do you want to learn (or both)? if you want to learn chinese, try your hardest to get chinese put in your contract -- otherwise, you'll be assigned according to the needs of the military.

3. the air force will let you enlist for four years, though the bonus is considerably smaller. the army's minimum is five years.

4. shoot me an email in the next day or so -- i'll open myself up to spammers for that long.

oh, yeah, and the dlab...don't worry too much about it. if you've ever taken a foreign language and done well in it, it shouldn't be a problem for you. even if you've never studied a language, if you know what a verb is, you'll probably still pass.

I am retired Army and studied both Russian and Korean at the Defense Language Institute. Both languages are 47 week courses. I was in Military Intelligence and had great assignments in both Europe and Korea. I was an interrogator and an instructor at the US Army Intelligence School. Chinese is in great demand and will increase in demand throughout the years. If you decide to enter the military make certain your enlistment contract specifies that you are enlisting specifically for language training if so qualified.

The DLAB is a made up language. There is no practice for it. It is difficult. As I mentioned in your previous post, consider CTR vice CTI. Monterey is a great school, but you will not master a language. CTR provides you some technical background that you may need in the civilian world.
