Check around! Many airlines will allow you to travel with your pet on the same flight. However, you must inform the airline and confirm their pet travel protocol.

AirTran allows small dogs to travel with you in a carrier for an extra $65.
US Airways charges $100.
Avoid taking him in cargo- there have been a number of cases, particularly in the summer months, when animals have died due to stress and overheating.
Check out the link at the bottom of this answer- it's a list of all the airlines and their policies.
You're lucky- you have a small dog that you can take right in the cabin with you! Have fun on your trip and I think it's great that you're taking your pup along!

Under the "Links" tab, click "Travel links" and scroll down to the airline list, which is in alphabetical order.

Well... I'm pretty sure that the UK still has a rabies quaranteen that is required for animals entering the country. Not sure if things have changed, but it used to be that an animal has to be boarded at a government run kennel for 6 months before they can be released to person owning the dog. This is also true for several other countries.... Japan is 2 weeks, and Hawaii is 4 months.

there's two good points raised in the other answers here...one, most airlines wont accept animals if the temperature at the airports is going to be over 75 degrees....because the dogs suffer out on the tarmac waiting to be loaded as cargo....so depending on what time of year you are traveling it might not be possible.

You MIGHT be able to take the dog as a carry-on, if it is well tranquilized

BUT

England is notorious for their anti rabies quarantine..make 100% sure they have changed their policy and will let the dog in....otherwise she/he goes to quarantine for 6 months, no exceptions!!!

From my past experiences weather conditions are the biggest problems. If the dog is going with you price will be determined by crate size. I'm not sure if you can take the dog inside plane or not ,like in a carry on or not. GOOD LUCK
