I have a very irritating and persistent cough. I was sick a short while ago but the cough stuck with me after I got better. This has been happening for years, and I always seem to have some kind of a cough during the cold months. I can feel a lot of mucus built up in my throat and in my sinuses. This is one of the worst occurences I have ever had. I have never had any allergies. I did used to smoke cigarettes but I quit several months ago, although I do indulge in other types of smoke daily. My parents suggested to me that I might have chronic bronchitis or some other serious condition and that I should get to a doctor right away. Does anyone have any idea of what this could be, and how serious it might be? Any advice? I thank you in advance.

It could be allergies, even if you've never been diagnosed before.

It could be aggravated seriously by the "other" smoking you do.

Getting a battery of tests from a doctor is very good advice. A chronic cough is not something you should ignore or hope that it will go away on its own.

I once suffered from Chronic Bronchitis. I would suffer sometimes 3 to 4 times per year! Usually when there was a major change in the pressure outside (I live in the north, and the temperature spikes and dips do wonders to chronic sufferers of bronchitis!). Each time I would get horrible hacking coughs, hoarking up green phlegm..it was so frustrating!

The key to getting rid of your bronchitis is to find a way to completely eliminate the germs that are causing all the phlegm and irritation leading to your hoarking cough and heavy breathing. Keep reading to learn how to do kill these germs!!

From what you have described, you have chronic bronchitis. Take it from someone who has it and has had it for about fifteen years. Both my wife and I have chronic bronchitis. We were brought up in smoker's households, developed bronchitis over the years and have never smoked a day in our lives. We have difficulty breathing all of time and find ourselves gasping for air at times. Respectively, we have a chronic cough. At times, that cough produces a thick clear and/or green mucus. My wife wheezes when she sleeps. Whenever our bronchitis gets very bad, we immediately make an appointment with our primary care physician. I'm coughing for no apparent reason right now even as I am typing my answer to you.

my guess is that its either chronic bronchitis or the early stages of pneumonia. I would go to a doctor and get this checked outl

Well, with bronchitis your throat usually really hurts, and you kinda lose your voice.

My mother had it and yes it's serious.
