I love NYC in December! Definitely check out Rockafellar Center, where the big tree is (and ice skating!)... Also, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park, 5th Avenue, window displays at Macy's, the Empire State Building, etc. Most of this is within reasonable walking distance from Times Square (depending on the weather!)...as that's where we always stay too.
If you feel like taking a subway or a cab, I'd also recommend a trip down to Southstreet Seaport. There is a beautiful view of the Brooklyn Bridge and some neat restaurants and shops there.
Have a great time!!

Definitely check out the window displays at Macys and other stores.......at this time of the year they're actually worth seeing, amazing.
Go Ice skating..........take a fairy to the Statue of Liberty.....they have midnight fairy rides and the skyline is beautiful.
Go to the village and check out the nightlife.
It won't seem cold at all.
Have a slice of pizza on the street to keep warm or a hot pretzel from a vendor.
Have a wonderful time. NYC is great nomatter what time of the year. People from all over the world will be there, especially at this time of the year. Wish I were going. Hey, Do Not worry about finding things to do. They will find you, trust me. There's so, so much going on, you won't miss out even if you don't know where to go because wherever you are........there will be plenty of action and excitement. Try "The Slaughtered Lamb"...it's in the Village, inexpensive, great crowd, pool tables, great burgers and beers type place. It's surrounded by many other little nightlife spots so you can easily walk to plenty of places. Take a cab, it won't cost much...............I said this before, I wish I were going.........so much fun!

If you're in the Holiday Spirit a trip to Rockefeller Center to see the Tree is pretty cool. You can Ice Skate on the Rink there or take a Carriage Ride thru Central Park. Similarly, a stroll down 5th Avenue to see the decorations ie Tiffanys, Cartier etc...

You should go to Ellis Island to see where all the immigrants landed all those years ago. Go to Central Park and walk/see the ice rink and enjoy all the posy people stretching legs up trees. And go to Times Square in the evening to see the huge, wonderfully lit advertising things and eat an enormous slice of American cheese cake. Oh, and go shopping to Macy's. Enjoy!

You absolutely MUST MUST MUST see the Lion King. It is no longer at the New Amsterdam Theater ... but it is still playing. I've seen it three times, and can't wait to go again (it's not just for kids, I'm 40).
You also should see some of the museums.
