Downloading free file sharing software from www.limewire.com is safe AND legal. It's what files you choose to download and what you choose to do with them that can get you into less-than-legal territory. I personally use Limewire for particular mp3 downloads, but I have run into trouble if I try downloading games and other programs like that. Do make sure you have a good updated antivirus program running, and definitely don't download anything that looks fishy. That's pretty obvious. Limewire has served me well for lots of downloads of songs. It's easy to use and almost all the songs are easy to find.

Limewire used to install spyware on your system once upon a time, but it doesn't anymore. However, I can guarantee that you could instead use eMule and gnutella safely. Here are links.
Do NOT try to get eMule from emule.com. Not the right site.

its only as safe as you are smart
never download executable files (with the exe extension)
always have a good virus scanner and know the proper sizes for mp3's and stuff like if the file your downloading is 134.kb and your downloading a 3.5 minute mp3 its a risk
ive stuck to just downloading mp3's with it for a couple of years and i have never had a virus
safe surfing...

It's a thin line between copyright infringement and what's legal. The problem is, no one knows that exact line. So, some people get in trouble for what they share, and others don't.

I use it and love it. I do not have problems with spyware unlike other services. Make sure you have adaware just in case. Pluse it helps rid your computer of spy ware from going to certain websites.
