The reason why I had ask the question was cause I am concerned, plus where I live we have kind of a problem with coyotes in the area, and the same goes for black bears, besides that the only time I let my dogs outside unattended but there is always an adult present. Plus one my neighbors had lost her dog and she had a pretty big dog, I don't know if it was due to coyotes but there have been actual reports of them coming even to area where people live. We use to not have that much of a problem with coyotes but it cause what we do and don't really think about it. The question is more likely would a coyote that has lost its fear of humans attack or get one of my dogs alone. When i take my dogs out on walks I never go alone.

Coyotes used to come onto my property to steal my chickens..My large hounds would always whip them soundly, and protect the ranch, but my hounds were pretty chewed up..suffered some pretty serious injuries..One was too scarred up to show any more..another limped for the rest of his life..
Coyotes have never followed and attacked humans, though..never

Depends on the breed. If you have smaller dogs they need to be with someone at all times. Well all dogs need to be kept in a confined area so they don't wander off (like it sounds like your friends dog did unless he was defending the territory). Coyotes are really pretty harmless around larger pets. Cats are usually their targets, but if the cat puts up a fight they leave them alone. I've never heard of a coyote or even a black bear go after a larger pet. Just make sure they're in a fence and that they can't get out.

We have coyotes all over around where we live. The problem with coyotes is that they are pack hunters, and seem to have some concept of strategy, like splitting a target off from the group. The packs around here have definitely lost their fear of humans. I have had them sit there and watch me without moving, while I was on my tractor brush hogging a field. I've gotten as close as 20 -30 feet from them, and they don't budge. If they don't fear a Case IH 340 with a BH, I'm not sure what would scare them, aside from a pile of buckshot. We used to feel safe enough (10-15 yrs ago) to let our two kids play outside as long as our dogs were there with them (pretty protective of them), but I'm not sure we would today. When I hear them close now, I take down my 12 gauge and go for a walk.

Coyotes probably wouldn't come after you, while on a walk, but they can and probably do, cause a threat to your dog, if he's outside in an unfenced area. Coyotes tend to single animals out, but usually will not attack more than one. They also have a tendency, to ''beckon'' the animals to them, such as dogs & cats. They'll pretend to want to play, and will have the animal follow them out of view. Usually, there will be other coyotes, waiting where the unsuspecting dog cannot see them.

Unfortunately we have encroached on their territory and many coyotes have lost their fear of humans and will attack and kill a domestic animal if given the chance. There are also instances where they have done this with a human in the vicinity, so if you do have coyotes in the area, always have your dog on a leash.
I hope that helps!

I understood your question. A lot of people (including myself sometimes) are quick to judge. I didn't answer because I didn't know.

I understand what your concern is though. I used to live on 165 acres. There were nights it seemed like the pack of coyotes was right outside my bedroom window. My pets were never outside unsupervised either. Coyotes are dangerous.

I hope you get the answers you're looking for.

Yes, and the fact that there will probably be more than one coyote is not in your dog's favor. They are wild animals. You dog is not. Keep a close watch!

Yes it probably would if it was protecting its territory because a coyote jumped on my Blue Heeler it didn't mess him up it just ripped open his shoulder

I could see where that could be a confusion, but I would probebly put a fence around your property, with an electric fence. And maybe take your dog out when it is light outside.
