I have giant breed dogs and we start them on Large Breed Puppy formula and then switch them to a Large Breed Adult at 10 weeks. You do not want them to grow too fast and you do not want too much protein.
Check with your vet, but it is better to follow instructions from other giant dog owners and breeders. Some vets don't have a clue about feeding giant breeds.

Whatever you do, DON'T feed any kind of puppy food- not even those developed for Giant Breeds- to a Great Dane. If they grow too fast during this stage, they can become lame due to joints not forming properly. These foods are rich in proteins which causes them to grow far too fast and their limbs to form quicker than they their bodies can handle.
People foods also contain a lot of proteins and minerals that Great Danes can't have- the only vitamins that a Dane should have, and even then it is in limited quantities, is Vitamin C.
Find a food that is low in calcium and protein- any regular dry adult dog food, as low as you can find.
If you are unsure, please call a reputable Great Dane rescue in your area- they will be happy to help and often times may have more breed specific information than even a vet!
Good luck with your puppy!!

I don't know if there is a best food so to speak, but some good diets to check out are" Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy or Hills Prescription Diet P/D Large Breed ( the latter is only available at you local vets office) You want to go with a highend large breed formula because large breeds grow very fast and you want to prevent any joint damage that might occur from an improperly balanced food.

Your puppy needs a puppy food for large breeds. There are quite a few different companies that offer puppy food for large breed puppies so shop around for the one with the best ingredients and go for that!
Remember that he is a puppy and needs to have several meals during the day not just one or two.
Have fun with your new puppy!

I'm not sure the brand, but go to Petsmart or Petco. They have food for giant breeds. You need the proper diet for a great dane. Their bones and joints need to grow properly.
Congrats on your new baby!
