You could use either acrylic or oil paint. Oils will take longer to dry, unless you use a fast-drying medium like Galkyd or Liquin. They're both perfect mediums to use on wood.

Which ever you choose, you'll need to give the surface a light sanding with steel wool to give the paint something to grip. Then a final coat of varnish would be wise.

Lightly sand with the grain, apply a coat of gesso, then use any good acrylic paint like Liquitex or Utrecht's. Depending on your preference, protect it with matte or gloss varnish or nothing at all. Will this be used for playing or displaying? The sound may change due to the density of a paint layer.

i would say acrylics are best that would be the best for coverage and stikcing to te wood, i havent tried oil on a guitar it hink theyd be too watery, i would go with acrylic paint, dont use tempera itll wash right off good luck

Not to say the same thing but you can use whatever you like. The important part is what you seal it with when your done. Polyeurathane, spar vanish... Ask your Home Depot paint guy to point you in the right direction.
