I have a 65 and a 66 VW Bug. I am looking to buy an original tool set that was sold in the 60's or thereabout to work on these cars. Does anyone know where I can find one? Thanks.

Question, are you looking for the tool kit that every VW came with or the accessory kit made by Hazet?

Originally all air-cooled Volkswagens came with a basic toolkit from the factory. While millions of these kits where made (every car had one), they are usually missing. The tools were made by Hazet and the tool bags where actually made from scrap material at the factory (seat covers). Here is a picture of one from 1971:

Here’s the tool bag from my 65, for some reason I don’t have a picture with its tool, but can take one if it’ll help:

Surprisingly these toolkits can be hard to find, but there out there. EMPI makes a reproduction one that is basically junk, over priced, and doesn’t look at damn thing like the original ones. Wolfsburg West makes a reproduction that is much nicer:

Now the other tool kit is the Hazet accessory one and is a very hot collectable so, don’t expect to get one cheap. There where made to originally fit in the spare tire, under the hood on wide five models. With the switch to 4 lugs they went to a square box, then finally a roll up kit. These are very nice tool kits and the tools are of very high quality, but do to there value this isn’t someone thing you probably want to use. A complete kit will probably run you from $400 to over a $1000, depend on how completely and condition. You can find them for sale on thesamba.com as well on eBay. For pictures check out the any of the accessory brochures on these pages:

As far as reproductions: EMPI once again makes a copy of this kit for around $100 bucks, but it’s purely for looks. The tools they use are not Hazet, but cheap made in China junk. Hazet is still around in Germany, and there prices are comparable to Snap On.

Maybe a local junkyard, I have found some parts for my '72 super beetle at my local junkyard. Try Ebay also. Good Luck with your VW!!
