Go to your county's main web site. There will be a link for registered sex offenders/predators. Some counties have very specific search options, whereby you can even type in a specific neighborhood (by name). Brace yourself. Hopefully you won't see any familiar faces (yes, the files, which are public record, DO have the offender's photo attached), but, I guarantee you that you will be STUNNED at how many of them there are....and I don't even know where you live. It doesn't matter anymore.

In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts you can go to your local Police Department and fill out the paperwork. When you fill it out (U need your license info & copy of it) they can show you a copy of all Level 2 & 3 offenders residing/working in your town. If you have more than 1 zip code, request all zip codes so you can get the entire town. Some departments may limit you to your residential area, but if your kids' school is in another zip code, include that one. Level 0 and 1 are not viewable by public. No matter who you are! The Level 2 & 3 info is shown to you by picture, offenses and date of offenses. Every state is different but here's Mass' website:
Also, the national checks are only good for Level 3. It doesn't show you the Level 2's. At least in Mass it doesn't

This website is the Nationwide website for Sex Offenders.
http://www.registeredoffenderslist.org/
"Get the complete registered sex offenders package , including a neighborhood map identifying the sex offenders, detailed photographs of the sex offenders , addresses and more. Find out who these registered sex offenders are, and exactly where they live in your area. You will be able to enter your full address and specify a report radius."
The only bad thing is you have to pay 10 bucks for this one...
This one allows you to search by state and is free

Check with your local police department.
Ask to speak with their public affairs officer and ask if the PD has a web site which posts this information.
If they don't, request information about sex offenders...and ask that they set up a web page.
If they refuse, talk with your city councilor (or whomever represents your neighborhood).
See if you can get something going.
If that fails, contact the mayor's office.
BTW - keep a record of all you talk to.
If all else fails, write an op-ed piece and send it to your local newspaper...they love to hear about the shortcomings of elected officials.
