I Left the Marines a few years ago as a corporal....I always wondered..."If I had stayed?" My questions are:
1)If you're a Gunny; "Who" or "What" determins if and when you get promoted, do you become a "Master Sgt" or a "First SGT"???
2) If you go the Master SGT route, can you still be a SGTMAJ?or do you "must" become a "MAsterGunny"?
3) Can a Master Gunnery Sergeant become "Sgt Major of the Marine Corps"???

Ok, you are given the option to either take the 9999 MOS (1st Sgt/SgtMaj), or stay in your occ. field and go for Master/Master Gunny. Once you take one route, you stay there. And no, a Master Gunny cannot become Sgt Major of the Marine Corps.
Edit: There is an option called Sergeant Major Through Master Sergeant that you can do if you opt for the Master Sergeant route first and decide you wish to be on the other side.

Certain MOS have an option. Infantry applies to the 1st Sgt route. Most of the other MOS can apply for 1st Sgt, but if they are not accepted, then, assuming they are promoted past GySgt, they will go to MSgt.
If you are selected as a 1st Sgt, then your last promotion will be to SgtMaj. If you are a MSgt, then you will become a MGySgt.
I can't believe you did 4-5 years and don't know this.

I don't really know bout the first two questions but for the third question I believe that a MGySGT cannot become a SGTMAJ of the Marine corps because once you are an E-9 that is it because I just spend two months at Parris Island before I got dropped and an E-9 is it for just an Enlisted Marine.
