The difference between the two is very small. They are essentially the same techology developed by two different companies, and each company is trying to convince the world that their format is better. It goes back to the BetaMax, VHS days. The HD-DVD can hold more information as of right now, but i'm sure Blu-Ray will catch up ASAP. It looks like more movie studios have decided to release titles on HD-DVD, making it the more widely accepted model, but then Sony but the Blu-Ray player in the PS3 making it more valuable also. There's really no way to know right now which format will come out on top a year or two from now, so if you're going to spend a lot of money on one or the other, make sure the movie studios you most like to watch have adopted that format. The technical differences are very very slight. Hope this helps.

If you will base it on the specifications of the products (i.e. players, discs) involved along with their potential then Blu-Ray is definitely better. But, a number of comparison tests would show that neither product has a clear advantage over the other although with the PS3, Blu-Ray would become more popular. At the same time, HD-DVD is cheaper and for some folks price is everything.

No insult intended, but this question has been asked at least 5 times in the last 3 weeks. See the answers at the links.
By the way, "T" is almost dead wrong. Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are blue laser based. Blu-Ray is NOT "far better" ... in fact at the moment HD-DVD is superior. HD-DVD disks hold 30 GB not 8, etc.
Experts advise not to buy either format for at least the next year until the technology matures, prices come down and we see whether one or the other format prevails (or both remain marginal and are replaced by movies on demand or holographic storage or whatever.)..

HD-Dvd is losing, as Toshiba is cancelling it entirely. Blu-ray is a higher definition format that uses 1080i to present a clearer/sharper picture to your hi-def TV, potentially. I say potentially becuase you can have a hi-def TV that doesn't do that good (1080p and 1080i are different). Basically, don't buy an HD DVD, they're going the way of the lazer disc and betamax/8 track.

HD-DVD is a basic red laser eye that can read up to 8 GB DVDs.
Blu-Ray is a more advanced laser eye that is blue that can read 50-60 GB DVDs. This is why it's called "Blu-Ray" blue ray laser.
There are Blu-Ray DVDs that hold a lot more GB then normal DVDs or HD-DVDs.
Blu-Ray is far better but more expensive.

This question has been asked so many times and in so many ways. Simply google and you'll find the answer to your question. Other than that, either this is a marketing question by a marketing company or someone being lazy to simply get the answer. I don't meant to be rude.
