When she gets on her school bus, her hair is brushed and looking nice. By the time she comes home, her hair looks like a hurricane hit it!!

She loves her long hair so I don't want to chop it all off... but her long waves are out of control! Pony tails seem to make her hair break off, and barrettes fall out.

I am not real good with hair to begin with so any suggestions are welcome!

well I would have suggested french braid pig tails or regular pig tails but you said pony tails make her hair break.
they do have different types of hair ties if you were to keep her in a regular ponytail.

I know you love the hair but, if you want it to be neat you will have to braid it after her bath and maybe it will make it smoother when you let it hang down or braid it in the morning. That way the elastics are at the ends of her hair and not the top. She needs trims every 3-6 mos. anyway to keep it growing and looking good. Or you can let her wear it up using very heavy coated elastics, the ones that don't break hair as easily and then use bobby pins and hair spray to keep it in a tight bun. Also, if she has long beautiful hair and it doesn't bother her, it's out of her face and she's happy, don't worry about it. The breaking usually happens over time and using hair conditioner and regular trims should help with that. Also, not allowing her to sleep or nap in elastic bands will help. Try different types of hair barettes, they aren't all equal. Good luck.

do you put a leave in conditioner in her hair? a regular pony tail holder made for hair shouldn't make her hair break off unless it is really dry.

i suggest washing it at night, conditioning it, and then comb it out and put in a really good leave in conditioner. While it is wet but it into two pig tails up pretty high on her head and then braiding them into tight braids. Let her sleep in it that way and you probably will just have to tame the fly aways in the morning or take it out, spray it with water and conditioning spray, and rebraid it.

i have a had a lot of curly haired girls come through my class and that is the best way to keep it unknotted through out the day!

good luck!

My suggestion would be to tame her hair with some John Freida anti-frizz serum, this way, she will have together locks when she comes home. The only thing this poses is the need to wash her hair more than every other day. She may need a more intense shampoo. Read the directions on the serum to know how to put it on. This will weigh her hair a little to give it a more sleek, shiny, together look.

Part it on each side and comb it to the back and braid it, leaving less hair flowing down. Experiment where to part the sides. Don't use rubber bands. Buy the bands that have a fabric wrap. If you do use rubber band then place them in different lengths of the braid.

Try parting on just one side for a change and braid down the side.

Maybe you need a better conditioner for her hair.

Hope this helps. Don't cut her hair. In time you will come up with something.

My 5 year old has never had her hair cut and it is the same way I have to braid it every night and put it in a pony tail or braid it every morning or it gets to notty to brush. Its a huge pain but so pretty I couldn't have it cut.

try braiding her hair into sections and securing the ends with rubber bands and add the barrettes for decoration..
