Last night, I brought a Halogen lamp out of my bedroom and put it next to the computer because I needed to type up a draft of a handwritten essay.

For some reason, whenever I turn the lamp off/on the speakers make a "pop" sound, as if I had turned the speakers themselves off/on. The speakers are plugged into a small extension cord running out of the main computer power strip. The lamp is plugged into the main strip. The cords do not cross at any point, the lamp is about 2-3 feet away from the speakers.

What is the "pop" noise from the speakers coming from? is it bad? is it good?

The pop is caused by power feedback. It's just like how you may see the lights flicker or noise on the TV, when someone runs the blender or vacuum cleaner.

You can try to plug the lamp on a different powerstrip or outlet. Or you can always turn your lamp on first, then your computer speakers. Personally, I would just do the latter. It's simple.

Technically, the only way to prevent that is to connect your speakers to a line conditioner, but I don't want to go on that tangent.
