A society that is not bonded by religion won't need the anti depressants because they will not have to constantly consider themselves imperfect and undeserving. They won't need to keep to themselves because people will be more accepting of differences. The lonliness will not exist if you ask me.

You think that people who are not 'bonded by religion' have no beliefs? That might be one of the 5 most preposterous things I've read on Yahoo answers all week. The simple fact is that they have PLENTY of beliefs, but those beliefs just dont happen to correspond to YOURS, and you apparently find this difficult to accept. No surprise there really, but see, thats the problem with religions. They cannot/will not consider that there are any valid points of view other than there own. As for me, if I had to choose between a population of free-thinking individuals or a population of credulous, group-thinking people without an original thought or a sense of critical inquiry between them, I'll pick the former in a hearbeat.

I would like to find something somewhere in between. Your first choice is obviously horrible. But when I read "bonded together by religion", what immediately comes to my mind is a single monolithic religion that controls everybody's activities, conversation and thoughts. (see the middle ages). I wouldn't want that either - and I don't think that is really what you are referring to.
Society needs a certain amount of freedom, but freedom in which religion, or "faith" as I prefer to say, plays a large part in individual lives. This faith would be strong enough to influence society's values in general, but not enslave society.

A society bonded together in love and truth.

religion doesn't bond- it gives people an excuse to think they are different, and use that excuse to set up social caste systems under the assumption that one sect of religion is superior to the next, more accurate, and/or just a plain old excuse to knock others around... religion creates false enemies among people who would otherwise have no reason to fear each other other than the fact that some people are just screwed up.

Which religion? That's the problem. How about a society bound together by love and acceptance. Diversity is celebrated and we care about each other irregardless of political and theological differences.

Why couldn't the atheists have friends?? And family. There's no reason to be lonely just cuz you don't have a God.
