It is possible. It probably happens more often then you think.
Tapeworms larvae can be found in the blood of an infected animal. If one of those larvae is ever eaten, then it may grow in your digestive system, latch on, and give you tapeworms as well.
Now, I know you don't drink the blood of your pet (at least I HOPE you don't), but there are plenty of insects around that do. If any of those should happen to get mixed in with your food or fly into your mouth while you're asleep, then you may be infected from the blood the insect may have just sucked out of your cat. This is actually how the pets usually get tapeworms themselves - by eating a flea or something that had just come from a different animal which is infected.
Obviously it's not something you're likely to do on purpose. But it can still happen. Children are a bit more prone, with their tendancy to stick everything in their mouths. Below is a link to the CDC website with more info, if you're interested.

The most common tapeworm in cats is transmitted by ingestion of fleas. Humans are susceptible to this tapeworm in the same manner -- by the ingestion of an infected flea. This usually isn't a problem in adults but may be a problem with young children who may swallow a flea when nuzzling a pet.

what you see coming out is segments of the actual tapeworm. The actual tapeworm itself does not come out until it is dead usually because it is latched on. The only sure way to get rid of it is medication from the vet (our vet only charged for the shot, no office visit, so it was 7 dollars.) People can get them if they eat a flea infected with it so it is very unlikely that it will happen, but it IS possible. Again, the segments coming out are NOT the worm, they are actually little egg cases (Yes, very nasty).
It's a nasty thing to deal with so get the medicine and get the cats on flea preventative (we use Frontline) and you shouldn't have to worry about it anymore (unless your cat also makes it a habit of eating rodents, they can get it from them as well)

Hi there..A tapeworm (Taenia) is an infestation of the digestive tract with the tapeworm parasite.
A tapeworm can come from a cow, pig, sheep, dog, cat and other animals.
Tapeworm eggs are passed in the stools of those who are infected and spread through water or surfaces contaminated with feces.
People with tapeworms can reinfect themselves if they accidentally ingest the flea or flea larvae. More commonly seen in children.
Tapeworm eggs hatch in the intestine and develop in cysticerci (cysts) in the muscles, brain, other organs or eyes
Here's a website which shows photos about tapeworms: http://www.dr-dan.com/tapeworm.htm

If your cat has tapeworms, then it is shedding little things that are white and slippery on the cat's back end and turn to little things that look like dried yellow rice where the cat has laid.
To get tapeworm, you would have to eat a few of them, or eat a few fleas. If you would like to see a website just do an advanced search for cats and tapeworm.
There is no over the counter wormer for them, and they are very bad for your cat. Once your cat is treated, the danger is over, unless it gets fleas again.

Tapeworms come from eating fleas! As far as getting them from the cat. you would have to come in pretty close contact to it's fecal matter. They die within seconds of being eliminated thru your cats stool. To be safe get the cat wormed and treat it once a month with flea treatment.

Normally contact with faecal matter, be aware that cats do wash themselves...however transfer from just touching the cat is unlikely.
