Ok. I cross the street making sure no cars are around and low and behold a driver is close on my tail ready to run me over. I smile, wave, and say: HELLO loudly. Another incident, in the parking lot. I walk close to the car end that way the driver has all the room in the world to drive. Again a lady is head on with me, and I have no room to move. I smiled at her and she started laughing back. Don't these people get it?

Note: I don't want to yell, or start anything, so I use this reverse psychology. Should I let them run over me?

I'm more typically a driver than a pedestrian. People in genral I think are becoming increasingly impatient. If it's like some little old lady taking her sweet time it doesn't bother me because she can't help it. What really gets my goat are the pedestrians that take their sweet time as they saunter lazily across road without regard to the fact that there are people waiting for them to get out of the way. And those little brats on college campuses that just walk right out in front of you instead of waiting for a clearing in the traffic. Argghhh! Ten points to the people that hustle across the street - I love those folks.

Why must pedestrians cross in the middle of the block, very slowly, and not paying attention to the fact that there are, often, no cars behind you and if they let you pass they can cross at any speed they want without having to be angry at drivers?
Its called Jay walking when you do that, and even if you get hit, you can get a ticket.
There is also the consideration of streets with two lanes going each direction. If you are in one lane and stop, it doesn't mean the people in the next lane over can see the pedestrian and could possibly run them over. In these scenarios, it is safer to make the pedestrian wait for a break in traffic.
Take some responsibility for yourself as a pedestrian and make the streets (and sidewalks) safer.

Depending on the traffic rules, but normally, unless it is on a zebra crossing, I would let the car go first, regardless of the fact that the road sign at the intersection says 'Give way' or 'Stop' to let pedestrians and other cars to go first.
Funny thing is that even though the drivers know they have to give way, a lot of them simply had severe amnesia when it comes to that rule. Mind you that giving way was one of the most tested subjects for getting driver's license!.
DRivers get the protection of their car, so somehow they feel invisible to others, hence, can afford to be rude. Have you ever noticed drivers picking on their nose thinking that they are in such a private environment while the windows were not even heavily tinted.
As for the comment about pedestrians crossing slowly and staring at the driver as if daring them to be hit, HELLOOOOOOOO, wouldn't you stare back at drivers when they try to run you over while you CLEARLY already half-way crossing the street? And as for the speed, not everybody does powerwalk you know!

I'll answer your questions when someone tells me why pedestrians insist on crossing the street, against the traffic light, as slowly as possible; all the while looking directly at the the driver as if daring him to run the pedestrian over.

It's a game the play. They get point for how close they get, hitting an old lady's shopping cart, knocking people over, running people over, etc. I'm not too sure of what the point system is myself.
No don't let them hit you, you'd just be giving them more points.

Depends on which country you're at. In my home country, if you want to risk your life cross a busy street, but in the country Iam at now, pedestrians are like biohazards they avoid them like crazy :-)

Let them hit you - they'll be responsible for your hospital bills, get a ticket and you can probably even sue them.
On the downside, you could be seriously injured, but it'd teach them a lesson.
