The best kid pictures I have taken of my 2 year old, were real life pictures. He was outside just playing around and someone took pictures of him. They are the best pictures that I have had taken. He is so natural in them.

I like all the ideas so far. But if you do go with a backdrop in a studio, be sure to coordinate beforhand so that you don't wear dark colors on a dark background or anything that would "suck" you into the backdrop and make you disappear.
A nice pic, if the kids are young would be ones with you interacting with them and prompting genuine smiles :-)
We need to get a pic. we've been married 2 yrs and are already baking the second kid!! LOL.
Good luck. It'll turn out great.

That depends on what feeling you want the pictures to have. Do you want it to be dressy? Casual? Holiday/Season themed? I personally like casual ones the best. Why dress up to get your pictures taken when you don't dress like that all the time? And holiday/season themed pictures will only be good for that holiday/season. Just because a picture is casual, doesn't mean you just walk in there wearing "whatever" though..sometimes casual pictures aren't very casual at all.
Also, it depends on what room the pictures will be going in. For example if your living room is done in dark colors, you don't want a picture of the family wearing pastels hanging on the wall.
When you first said "I love pics of familes who wear all the same colors", the first thing that came to mind was all of you in dark blue jeans and white shirts with a white background. It would work in any room because there aren't alot of colors going on, it would work for any time of the year because it would be pretty simple looking, and the main focus would be on the family instead of the background and the props and all the color going on in the picture.

I have 5 kids and I know how hard it is to get everyone just perfect. My best friend has 4 kids and she took the best pic I have ever seen in my life. They were professionally done. They were outside in a park, laying on blanket. (brownish blanket she brought from home). Her and hubby was in the middle and the kids were staggered around them (to form almost a triangle) They were all dressed in everyday clothes...blue jeans and all. They were the BEST pics and they all look so natural. NOT LIKE these pic where they all look fake! Good luck

Talk to the studio or photographer who is doing your portrait and ask them what backgrounds they would suggest and they can also usually tell you what color schemes look great with which backgrounds.

Posed, studio shots look fake. Get some real-life pics done, as that one poster did. Natural light works best for me.

I'm like you.. I would go with white shirts and jeans, this always seem very dressed up yet casual at the same time.
