The unfortunate ones. Go look on ODMP.org and read every one of those stories. You now have my best training tool. Oh, while you are there..pay your respects.

The 1963 "Onion Field" murders in California were an important event in changing they way officers were trained.

Prior to this, officers were taught during range training to dump their empty shell casings into their hand (this was the revolver era) and then put them into their pants pocket, in order to keep the shooting range tidy.

As we fight like we train, when these officers were involved in a real gunfight, they wasted valuable time unloading their guns in this orderly fashion. The extra time it took to do this ended up costing these 2 officers their lives.

This incident caused law enforcement to recognize that creating bad habits during training could result in tragedy on the street.
