My son is 8 years old and he is having a tough time reading and spelling he gets frustrated easily and than he just gives up. I have tried everything but at the end it just seems as though I am giving him the answers. I went to his parent teacher conference for this marking period an he is doing very poorly in these areas. He has been left behind in the first grade for the same problems and I don't want to see this happen to him again. The thing that bothers me the most is that he gives the video games 100% effort and if he could just apply the same efforts to reading I am sure he will be a success!! I have stripped his game privlages from during the weekday and limited television to one hour per day is this too harsh on him I will be allowing him the use of the computer to play certain games pretaining to his problem areas. Do you think this is a good approach for him? If so let me know of some sites that he can visit to help him along Thanks guys!!

My daughter had a hard time learning to read when she was in Kindergarten and first grade. We found this wonderful web site: www.starfall.com
It has all sorts of interactive stories and other activities that helped her learn the fundamentals, such as grouping and basic phonics, even spelling. If he is reading a story and has trouble with the word on the page, it will even sound it out for him if he clicks on it. I believe the site goes as far as grade 4, but I may be mistaken on that part.

Sesame Street.com is also a good one, but my daughter liked the starfall one better. She said it was much more fun

I think that you are definitely correct about stripping the video games during the week. When my daughter was having trouble, the only way she could get computer time was to be on one of the sites I mentioned. She is doing MUCH better this year and is even helping some of the other kids.

My guess would be that it's not that he can't read well, it's just that he can't concentrate on it for very long. I've seen alot of kids who watched tv and played video games each day and they just simply couldn't concentrate on what they were doing. When the video games and tv got taken away, they started to be able to focus more and did much better on their work. I think banning the games from the weekdays and limiting the tv was the best approach so far.

As for getting him involved in learning games and things, I think it would be contradicting to let him sit on the computer and play games when you took his other games away. Computer games would have the same effect as video games as his concentration as well.

Maybe get some board games that are for learning. Scrabble would be good for teaching him how to spell words, even if they aren't very big words. Or, just try making up your own games to get him involved. Good luck and God bless :-)
