It can hurt, but in most cases it will help. Just don't try to bulk up too much. Heavy weight and low reps will help to build bulky muscle. Lighter weight and higher reps will help to build lean tight muscles. Bulky muscles will weigh you down...this is okay for linebackers, but not for marathon runners.
