It seems everytime I post that I am trained in hoodoo (which isn't even a religion by the way - voodoo is), I get a thumbs down. Before you pass judgement, isn't it smart to do some research on what you don't know or understand before deciding what you think? Are we as a society so closed minded and/or lazy to educate ourselves about other cultures? Even if later we chose that they don't agree with our own beliefs? What happened to tolerance?

I understand where you are coming from. I am a Vodouisant. I practice Vodou and Hoodoo. And unfortunately people will always be afraid of what they don't know. I like to educate people on the truths of the religion. Let them know that Hollywood blew it way out of proportion. Inform people of your practice so they maybe able to better understand what it is you do. Obvious they are too scared to inform themselves. Plus many mainstream religions dont promote tolerance only conversion.

Have you taken Cat's (luckymojo.com) course in Hoodoo. I have not been able to take the course but I was able to read the book. I highly recommend it.

Hoodoo has had a bad rep for a long time. And I think part of the reason people are afraid of such things is that there might actually be something to it, other than what they claim it.

Though I don't know much about hoodoo myself, I had heard it is a mix of cultures rather than just one. And, of course, the recent movie Skeleton Key makes claims about it, but I wouldn't place a whole lot on things found in movies like that without first coming to understand the basics of it in reality.

But the whole "tolerance" thing is, as far as real life goes, only for those in mainstream religions. They demand tolerance from those of us in minority religions yet will seek to keep our religious practices out of the public eye. They claim this is a land where Freedom Reigns... but it's only the type of Freedom that allows them to do what they want, to say what they want to say. Obviously they do not see these freedoms apply to us as well.

Hoodoo? Howdoyoudo? (Sorry, trite i know, but i couldn't resist!) Why are people afraid? I guess a greater question might be "are you afraid because you don't understand why people are afraid of what they don't understand?" That probably doesn't help much does it? Ummm, how about, who cares if they give you a thumbs down? Each to their own, surely? And society is not close minded, you've just not found your niche in it yet. You can't expect everyone to like the same stuff as you, and sadly yeah, people do reject out of hand the stuff they don't understand, because hey! the unknown is scary! Maybe as the open minded one YOU should learn to accept THEM! To err is human, to forgive divine. [Was that too patronising? Sorry!]

You are very right. People should research it, before it is
condemned. That's the problem in the first place. People need to look into the things they don't understand. But no.
Its easier to condemn.
I for one have researched your hoodoo.

Last I checked, we all have freedom of speech. You have the freedom to talk about it, and we have the freedom to shun you for it. There is no law saying anyone has to tolerate your personal practices in their presence. Why don't you tolerate others as much as you'd like to be tolerated? Maybe there's a little indicator there, that you aren't.

It's an instinct embedded into the human brain naturally through evolution... things we don't understand could be dangerous, therefore we are 'programmed' to avoid them.

We have to work against this instinct to become more tolerant in a civilized society

If people do not understand it, they probably can not control it. Man seems to fear what he does not understand.

people are ignorant sometimes. you can't do really much about it except........spread knowledge about your beliefs.
and just ignore the rude ones. some people don't want to broaden their horizons. and so, they are hopeless.
good luck to you.
and God bless.

I agree with your questions; sadly, I haven't the answers. Tolerance, thanks to the Holy Government, is slowly being eliminated.

Hoodoo is awesome, I need to learn more about it...
