The anti money laundering regulations in this country have changed recently. They need to verify your identifity somehow. They ask your number instead of getting a photocopy or other ID posted to them. They can tell your date of birth and if your male or female from your driving licence number, so they can verify whether it's real or not. The details are all kept secure though, and lets face it there's not really much they can do with your driving licence number... and they probably can't use it to track you down cos that would be breaching data protection.

in some states your drivers license number is yooue social security number but if it isnt they can access driving records and info from the registry
