"Possibly a reference to article 86 of the New York state liquor code which defines the circumstances in which a bar patron should be refused service or "86ed" "

86 means 8 feet deep and 6 feet long. Its the size of a grave, so if you 86 from a bar, you are in some BAD shape!!!

My husband and I just talked about this after I read it to him. We all know WHAT 86'ing means, but WHERE did the magical number 86 come from? It's a really good question! And we have no clue other than maybe a police code number for having to throw a person out.

Rumor has it the it refers to Article 86 of the New York State Penal Code allowing bar owners to forcibly eject undesirable patrons.

However, I can't find anything to back that up except a blurb in Wickipedia.

Also found indications it may come form U.S. Militry Article 86, having to do with Absencw Without Leave (AWOL)

86 is a term used in restaurants to let servers know they are out of a particular item. So, if the bar 86'd you....I guess they don't want you to come back!

It means that you are barred from the bar. To 86 something is an army term that means 'throw out', from an inventory list.
So, you were thrown out.
