Well let the children decide ! its going to be their grotto after all. Have a question time by asking what they think it will look like and go from there . You can add relevent christmas detail along the way. I.E santa etc.

I've seen this done- they cornered off a square with thick card- they taped it to the book boxes to keep it up and got heaps of cards, ribbon, paper and envelopes from Tesco value, or some other cheap range. The paper was cut into child manageable pieces, they also put some dressing up clothes- santa hats, reindeer antlers, christmassy books and bowls of baubles- if they are old ones ensure they are not glass.
A great way of encouraging developing writing skills and fine motor skills.

some plastic poles (say about 4 of),an old sheet preferably red or white, or both, a chair or seat make sure this is covered, some friends dressed as elves, doylies make gr8 snowflakes, decorations for the inside, and someone to dress as santa and you're almost there.

cotton wool is good for snow . a big comfy armchair (borrow it if you have too)Santa hats and elf costumes. toy tools for elf's to make things.
