well the best defense is not going into a fight at all...
but i know you wouldnt avoid any fight... you could sign up to a gym where they offer martial arts training...
**for throwing a good punch... the classic boxing beats all other punches...
**for a good kick...muay thai (or kick boxing)... i know people may think that it is the tae kwon do is the daddy of all kicking... but muay thai also uses knee which is one of the best and toughest move you can get....
**for speed... well tae kwon do and kung fu... well that is why asians have the reputation of speed... this martial arts are proven two of the quickest martial arts in the world...
**for grapling and defence... well aikido is my favorite... since it's just absorbing the power of your oppenent and throwing it back to him... plus i like the bone martial arts attributed in aikido... you will learn to target vitals to stop your opponent in moving...
also jiu jitsu is one of the fav in this section...
**it is also fun learning weaponry... i mean martial arts with weapon is a real tough cookie to crack... you'll need a bullet
oh yeah when it comes on disarming your opponent...i still recommend..aikido
anyways have fun

Okay my friend, it depends on what kind of selfdefense you need to know.
1) Firearm defense - if you want to prepare for someone with a firearm attacking, you should apply for a concealed gun lisence and take it to your local gun range. Practice on rapid fire discipline at a reasonable range (7-10 yards.) After you are comfortable, see if you can find some training classes on firearm self defence in the local phone book or on the internet.
2) Knife defence - This can be defended using nonleathal or less than leathal weapons. Using a stun gun or pepper stray device are excellent ways to counter a knife attack. However, stun guns need to be in contact with the enemy and some people have a natural immunity to pepper spray. I suggest that you use no less than a stun baton, a tazer (wired barbs shoot out and send electricity through the wire) or tear gas. Teargas will send anyone away, its so powerful that it will leave chemical burns on the flesh. I do not suggest learning how to knife fight, that is a bad idea IMHO.
3) Hand to hand - This has been a subject of debate since before time. There are so many people who pride themselves on thier style that they are not willing to look at what works. As a practioner of MMA and a highschool wrestler/ amatuer boxer I would be inclined to say that a mix of Muay Thai Boxing, American Boxing, Freestyle Wrestling, and Brazillian Jiu Jistu would probably take care of you. However, this is all geared towards one on one competition. When you are on the street or in a club (I was a bouncer for three years) you better believe people have no honor and will jump you. I suggest that you practive MMA for fitness, confidence, and for the chance that you might get into a one-one-one fight, but always count primarily on your sidearm and/or your tazer/teargas as a 99.9% surefire way to defend yourself.
All of this is taken from my 24 years of life experience, this is strictly opinion.

well I do recommend Muay Thai. yes it is aggressive and brutal, but you can choose what level you take it too. it is always good to practice something that can go all the way, than play it safe with a McDojo.
Everyone should practice using elbows and knees, as the elbows are good block defense and attack offense. and a good hit to the face knocks people down fast.
go for knee caps if you kick, no need to kick any higher than the knee. keep it simple and you wont screw up.
but you will, unless you go out and train.

krav maga is an excellent system that would more than give you the tools that you are requesting, check out their video collection, which makes it easy to learn moves at home: http://www.kravmaga.com/store/tek9.asp?pg=products&grp=30
for self defense, true self defense, you want to think primal, animalistic, your state of mind is a big factor in your survival. If you think victim you become one..
basic self defense techniques you want to keep in mind, eye gouging, biting, hair pulling, scratching..
gouge the eyes so hard that you feel them pop back into the skull
bite so hard that you feel your teeth touch
pull so hard that you end up with wads of hair everywhere
scratch so deep that you get skin and blood under your nails
that way if your attacker does get away, you have evidence on your person that the police can extract and possibly use to find him.
for something a little more polished, you want to focus on knees to the groin, palm heels to the face, elbows to the face and hammerfists to the nose.. these techniques are simple, and straight forward and easy to learn, they're also very forgiving, if you don't use perfect form you can still inflict a considerable amount of damage.
in krav maga you learn to incorporate these strikes and combine them with reactive movements like the pluck and the flinch.
martial arts are great forms of expression and dicipline and defense, however they may take years to become proficient in and to use on the street.
if you want a fast easy way to defend your self i'd suggest a self defense system like krav maga or rapid assault tactics or even jim grovers street defense, all great easy to learn, easy to apply systems for your personal protection...
hope this helps!
~*good luck*~

You are always better off avoiding the fight. Walk away when you can. Beat a man with wits and it is more satisfying than knocking him out. ( well sometimes )
Bottom line do not fight. But train as hard as you can in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Mouth shut, head held high. and have the confidence to know that you can protect you and your family.
There are those out there that will tellyou Karate is the same or better. The same with tai kwon do, mu tu how, blah blah blah.
There is only one way to fight, for the average man.

Buy a gun or don't hang out in bad neighborhoods. A mugger is not going to let you tap when he hits too hard and doesn't play by the same rules your buddies in the gym do.

this will help you to disarm a person with a gun or a knife:
it depends if he is behind me or in front of me.
if he is behind me then i would spin 180 degrees while grabbing his gun with my right hand, then apply pressure with my left hand to his right shoulder blade. (this really hurts the gunman).
if he is in front of me, i would grab his gun with my left hand twist it so i can strike him right underneath the arm pit, then grab a hold of his throat, put my right leg behind his and take him down.
I know this is a lot but if you really want to fight back, don't get in the range of his gun.
The one place that is the most vulnerable area, is the throat or the groin, attacks to these areas will always bring your opponet down.
