LCD because they're energy efficient and don't burn like plasma. plasma burns twot hings first if a picture is left still on the screen of a plasma for too long, then it will burn into the screen and there goes all your money down the drain. also manufacturers reccomend that you are atleast 15 feet away from the screen of a plasma because of the high radiation output of a plasma verses an lcd which has a very low output. also lcd's are usually 50000 to 100000 hours or more for a lifetime and they don't get darker as they get older. they're the way to go for the long run.

The research I've done thus far says this... Plasma in general is better at this point for the larger screen tv. Large screen LCD tvs (larger than 36") are still a new technology. Only the top end LCDs can match up to the quality of plasma at this point (they're getting better though). LCDs have what they call response time... if the response time on your tv is too slow it can create a drag effect This is especially noticable for watching sports like Hockey or playing 3d video games... a good response time is under 15ms... sony has a response time around 5 miliseconds... Plasma also has the LCD beat on the contrast side of things. The lowest end plasma will have a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and can go up to 3000:1 or better where as the top end LCDs will be in the 1000:1 ballpark. this means the Plasma has darker darks and lighter lights.
The new generation plasma has taken care of the burn issue and the issue of "refilling" the plasma is a myth this doesn't really happen (according to what I've read).
All that being said, I'm probably going with an LCD because they are more affordable and I'm only looking for a 32 or36 inch

LCD. Plasma TV's are good but every so often, about seven years, you have to refill it with plasma. Also if there is a big bright image that pops up on the screen, like the sun or a atomic bomb, the image can be burned onto the screen. LCD would be better but if you wait about a year they are coming out with a new TV that uses laser light that is as clear as HD when it is not really HD.

Plasma TV's are better for color and resolution. Most 9th generation and above Plasmas have corrected the burn in problem and you can get a cheaper big screen plasma over a big screen LCD. DLP is another option, but you also have to replace the bulb in the TV about once a year, which runs a couple of hundred dollars. Also, DLP TV's have fans which you can hear sometimes, to cool off. Today's Plasmas will last 30,000-60,000 hours before even losing half it's brightness. So unless you watch TV for 24 hours a day, I would go with plasma for price and picture quality.

I have been looking into this. Most HD Ready TVs are NOT True HD (1080 lines). To be future proof you should get a true HD TV.
Best LCD right now is the Sharp Aquos (6ms pixel response).
Lots of good and bad points on both types as mentioned above.
LCD is the most practical and environmentally friendly option - but the picture is slightly better on the Plasma... and it is alot cheaper (e.g. Hitachi one is £869)

It all depends on your rooms lighting conditions. Plasma TVs have a highly polished screen and tend to reflect a lot of lights from lamps, windows, etc. LCDs have a non-glare coating on the screen and reflect considerably less light than Plasmas.
So if your room is fairly dark or you are able to control your lights pretty well, go with Plasma. But if your room is really bright and you can't control light sources very well, go with LCD.
I, personally, have a Samsung 46" LCD in a really bright room with lots of windows and the picture is amazing even on really bright summer days with all the curtains open.

The answer to your question is LCD and to the guy further down who says LCD cant cope with anything more than 37" 'POPPYCOCK'!!
I have a Sony Bravia LCD 46" HDTV on the wall and its fabulous, just connected a XBOX360 to it today, the graphics are superb, I would recommend both to anyone.

The best are DLPs. Pictures like a photo. LCDs can develop blank pixels or whole blank lines. Plasma problem see above answer.

In a nutshell anything over 37" must be and should be a Plasma.
The Lcd can't cope with that size.
