both are nice. i tend to be a little paranoid sometimes, so i only let lovers i trust tie me up. and even then i usually tie the ropes to the bed myself so i know i can get free if i want. never had to though.
sometimes when i can talk my girlfriend into it i tie her up spread eagle(arms and legs at four corners) and tease her for a while. she usually squirms around, but the ropes let me have fun without having to hold her down :).
this is also a good time to bring in some toys

Both, they both bring you a different kind of "pleasure", one controlling and the other being vunerable, I recommend trying both, just watch the limits, it is VERY easy to go over board.
