One of my good friends lost her husband unexpectedly two and half weeks ago, and they have two children. I would like to host a golf tournament to benefit the family, but don't know where to start! I don't know anything about golf, so I don't know what mulligans are.....does anyone have any experience with this? The golf course is a big one in Houston, and they will help with everything, but wanted to get some ideas and insight before I jump in! Thanks!

First of all im very sorry to hear about your friends husband and I think its wonderful that you are trying to help.

Here are some things to do.

1. get to a golf course and tell them what you want to do.
2. set a date for the event.
3. decide on the format you want it to be.
4. go to some of the local stores and they may donate items.
5. set a rain date.
6. at the event sell mulligans for $5.00 apiece, ( this will all go to your friend ) allow players to buy as many as they want, its all for a good cause.
( mulligans are simply do over shots to give yourself a chance to do better )
7. purchase sodas and beer for the crowd.
8. have a dinner and awards set for after the event .
9. give prizes for longest drive and closest to the pins.
10. sell 50/50 tickets

The golf course staff will work with you in comming up with ideas and formats, a best ball scramble is traditional.

You need help.....At least find someone who knows a little about golf...... Lots of churches run tournaments ask them for some pointers ..... I have run a few in my life time.... they are a lot of work Good Luck!!!!!

Go to local stores and ask if the store would like to make a donation for the tournament for prizes. Have a team entry fee.
Have a slient auction for all the donated prizes. Place an add inside local stores telling when, where, and why the tournament is being held. Good luck with this and sorry about your friend.

I just played in a tournament not too long ago. It was in the Best Ball format. Meaning each team member takes a shot off the tee, the team decides which shot is the best and all 4 players then take a second shot from the position of the best first shot.....and so on until the hole is finished. It works out great because even if your new to the sport and not too good yet, it doesn't affect your team. This way you don't have to think about Mulligans either. The golf course will be able to give you details on the best ball format.

You can raise money buy having a small green fee in addition to the course fees.

I think it's great you are helping your friend like that! Good Luck, I hope everything goes well!

They have many tournaments like that at our local golf course. You can contact businesses in the area to have them be hole sponsors. Just place a small sign at the tee box on a hole with their information on it. Many pro shops will donate items just to have their name seen by more golfers. The schools or whoever hosts the tournaments usually sell pop and candy bars on the course too. Just strap a cooler to the cart and drive around. Once the tournament is over they also sell hot-dogs and chips to raise more money. I hope this helps you get started. Sorry about your loss also.

First, go to the golf course you would like to have it at and make a date. Golf courses fill up quickly with tournaments. Then while there, ask the PGA Professional to help you out with some advice. They will be more than happy to help as, you knowing what to do will help them. Anytime you need help with a tournament, ask a PGA Priofessional. I love when people come to me when they do their first tournament, it makes things not only run smoother, but they finally get some appreciation of how a golf tournament works. (Some advice.....when you have people sign up , have them pay you when they sign up not at the golf course. Why? that will make sure of two things, 1) that they will show up..people are gonna come out to play if they payed in advance and can't get their money back....2) that if something happens and it falls through, you will have the money to cover anything that not only goes wrong, but for those that no-show day of the tournament. Some places..if you have food..and you should....charge for the amount of food not the number of people, because they won't be able to reserve any food that was made prior).
