I have a 13 week old miniature beagle. During the day while I'm at work, I keep him in the bathroom with his crate and toys and go check on him at lunchtime. I was wondering when I should start just leaving him in his crate during the day (but still go home at lunch)? At nighttime he sleeps in his crate and wakes me up about 3am, 4am (to potty) and then we're up at 6. So he's doing better on his bladder control. He's trained to go potty on the puppy pads but we're starting to go outside to potty. It's hard since I live in an upstairs apartment and don't have a fenced yard yet. Any advice? The only time he has ever pottied in his crate has been when we are traveling on the road.

Sorry, that might sound a little confusing. I have his crate in the bathroom with him but I don't have him locked in it. It's just there if he wants to crawl in it and take a nap :)

Puppies can usually be crated during the day and hold it by about 5 months old. But, if he's doing well with what you are doing then keep that up. If he is having accidents in the bathroom then you can crate him and put a few toys in the crate with him.

If you can take him for a walk in the morning before leaving that would help his energy level.

I started my puppy in his crate right away. I felt bad locking him in a room so I put his crate out in the living room by a window and the door. I too lived in an upstairs apartment then. This also helped with potty training. As so as you let him out straight out side. Once he was about 1 year old I started letting him out for half days when I knew he could hold it and after 1 1/2 I let him out of then crate all day and had no problems.

A puppy will avoid going to the bathroom in his crate if he only has enough room to stand up and turn around (otherwise he might go in a corner where he is not lying). As your puppy gets older, he will get better at bladder control, so I would try crating him and checking him at lunch. Just make sure the crate is small enough. It sounds mean, but if the crate is too big the dog will just go to the bathroom in it.

First of all, really cute puppy, i have a beagle too. :) I don't see why you should have to put him in a crate. If he's not doing anything bad in the bathroom, let him just be there. He doesn't have to be in the crate. He seems fine

MOST dogs ( there seems to always b an exception to the rule) will not potty in their 'bed'. Unless urs happens to b an exception, he should hold it until you come home. If u are unsure. I would try it for a few days. Come home for lunch, take him out IMMEDIATELY, inspect to c if he had an accident. If he has, it may b too soon. We have several dogs and they sleep with us. They will not use the bathroom on our bed because that is their area too.

Do not give your dog too much space. The more space he has the more room he has to potty.

Sounds like you are doing everything right. Very cute puppy by the way!

I'm confused about your post...is he crated while in the bathroom?

Oh he is Adorable!!!!

I would say you can crate him anytime now. I started crating my dog at 4 months and she does not go in my house ever!
