get him something that he wants. I personaly like video games, so my girl buys me a video games, and I am happy. But if she got me something that I wouldn't use... like a mug that said "I love you" with a picture of her on the front, I probably wouldnt use it... get it.
Guys like it when girls know and appriciate what they truly want for xmas.
