I had to do this "3" times with my oldest years ago! I know what you're going through! First you'll have to buy a lice kit for her hair. If she has very long hair I honestly would recommend that you cut it short first. I know that can be hard for a child but hair does grow back. The 1st time I did it my daughter had very long hair and it took me over 8 hours to go through her hair. You have to go small section by small section! So cut first then treat. THEN - you have to treat your whole home plus any vehicles she may have riden in! That's right vehicles!! All toys that can't be physically washed including stuff animals should be placed in some kind of plastic bags and left for a week! The mayo thing does not work, you're left with greasy hair and difficulty getting it washed out, the same for vasoline! Yes RID is a pesticide so look for a product that doesn't have the same chemical.

ALSO afterwards as a precaution for the future! If you are a member or know someone who is a member of Melaleuca buy their shampoo!!!! I can not state enough how important this is!!! For some reason the lice/nits do not like the tea tree oil of this shampoo and it prevents future episodes! There are several correctional officers that I know who swear by it. They shampoo their hair regularly with this shampoo because of the inmates who constantly get lice. I have spelled the Company's name correctly. You can kind them on the website listed below. I live where the headquarters are and I use to do security work for the company so I am very familiar with their products. I highly recommend getting this shampoo for the future!

Good Luck with the treatment!

Oh gee...I just went throught this with my 7yr old daughter. It sucks and is very time consuming. DO NOT use the shampoo rid or any other like it. It is a pesticide and it don't do anythng because u can't "kill" the nits. I used it and was later told by her doctor that I shouldn't have. The best way is to wash the hair in vinager...it doesn't kill anything, but it disolves the glue or whatever it is that holds the nit to the strand of hair to make it easier to remove. Then buy one of the nit removing combs and come through every strand to remove them. I did this every night for about 5 nights and it was successful. Good luck!

Go for the Nix brand of lice shampoo. Make sure to follow the instructions properly, and don't use the comb that comes with the box- buy a fine tooth lice comb. You can find them in the same aisle with the lice shampoo. Make sure to wash all her linens, blankets, coats, hats, or anything else that could have come in contact with her head, and buy some lice-killing spray (same aisle) to use on matresses and furniture. Getting the nits out is a time consuming, tedious processs, so make sure to have plenty of clips to section off her hair, a book or movie to keep her occupied, and take breaks from time to time.

i don't know if she has full blown "nits" or what?? I know for a fact you can get RID shampoo/ can of RID. Use the stuff for two weeks and once ever three months. The can of the stuff is for hats, bedding, furniture, cloths that are being washed and that are in the closet. The shampoo is used like an other sham. just use it for the first two weeks and make sure you use the comb that is with it. your problem should be okay?? now.

Try to avoid the chemical shampoos. I used them on my daughter and it dried her scalp really badly. It was to a point where you couldn't tell nit from flakey scalp. The little combs worked best for us. Good luck. It's a miserable thing to have to deal with.

Rinse hair in plain old brown Listerine. Will kill lice and loosen nits. You will still have to take quite a bit of time to pull them out.

Buy a nit comb and lice shampoo

There is a special comb you will need, and medicated shampoo (I have heard of people using Mayonnaise and leaving it on for 30 mins). Everything in your house will need to be washed in hot, hot, water to prevent a relapse. But that comb will be the big thing, and maybe a pair of tweezers.
