The first world war was referred to both as
' The Great War ' in old English referrence to large or of moment, also, misleadingly, ' The War To End All Wars ' as the second world war disproved so effectively. It was called The Second World War from the start, I think. I prefer Archie Bunker's call on it:
" Da big one. Douba - ya douba - ya two. "
No. I doubt there's going to be a WWIII. We all know it doesn't go out that way.

(1) During World War I, it was known as The Great War "until the beginning of World War II when it was renamed."
(2) World War II had no other name, but like you suggested, it wasn't a world war right from the start. Therefore, you could say that the names of the battles that took place before it became a world war are what is important.

I believe that the French sometimes still refer to WWI as la guerre de '14-18: the War of 1914-1918. But, I don't know if that was used in the interwar period.
