Chihuahua? I've heard of "apple head"also. I have a chihuahua, and she is not stocky at all, her neck is long, her eyes are not "bulgy", she weighs about 4 pounds. I've been told that she is a "deer head". Is there any truth to all this "head" talk? Thanks!

Ps. My Minnie is the cutest chi in the world! :o)

Yes there is such a thing. AKC may not recognize "Teacup" or "Deer head" or "Apple Dome", but that does not mean they don't exist. I'm so tired of people saying that! They are names that the dog industry has made in order to describe dogs. So yes, its is just to tell you what the dog looks like or its size. Don't let people tell you no.

Its kind of like looking through the newspaper and coming across an ad that says "Immaculate Mercedes". No, mercedes does not "recognize" immaculate, but it is a word that somebody is using to describe the car.

Good luck with your tiny doggie! They are the best. I think owners of bigger dogs just get a little jealous when they see us travel with our little buggers on planes, take them to hotels, and even to malls, while they have to leave theirs' home or kennel them!

Deer head chihuahuas have flatter heads, eyes closer together and usually longer noses. Apple dome chihuahuas, which are more desirable, have a rounded head, usually a shorter muzzle and wider set eyes.

Hope this helps!
But basically Chihuahua is the only breed. There are just some differences between some and they came to be known as these two different "looks".

Deer headed chihuahua is a name that people use to describe the shape and size of their chihuahuas. Deer Headed is a description of the linky more slinder chihuahua. To get a true description of the chihuahua go to www.akc.org They tell you the true standard for the breed.

It is a poor quality Chi that was not bred with the standard in mind, no matter what cutsey name they call the fault. They are suppose to have a rounded "apple dome" skull. And I think Chi's are largely a 'head breed' as well.

IT is all a bunch of crap, just like the teacup thing. Go to the AKC website and see what the BREED STANDARD says they should look like....not what people have MADE them look like!
