Go to any local skate shop and ask the salesperson what would be a great startup deck for an 11 year old. Most reputable merchants will have a complete deck available for just this purpose with solid trucks decent wheels and a good quality deck. Speed Demon or the shop's brand is generally a great place to start ranging usually between $80 - 100.

Buying a deck (skateboard) from a store like WalMart or Zellers may not give an 11 year old the best experience that is neccesary to properly test skateboarding.

As a former skateshop employee I can assure you that most retailers will do whatever they can to assist both yourself and your son learn about skateboarding and the boards themselves. Also visit a local skatepark to have your son interact with other kids his age and learn more about the sport, better yet, sign him up for a skate safety course where he will learn how to do tricks properly and safely. Hope this helps, good luck.

Pretty much any department/discount store carries skateboards, and even some sporting goods stores. Check there.

Well, you can go to your local skate shop and buy a shop deck, trucks, and etc or buy a blank deck and gear like Mini Logo since they are usually cheaper and he or she could stick stickers all over the bottom.

Discount/Department stores are really cheap but also REALLY CHEAP quality.
