I have been giving her calcium pills only about 150 mg, Is that ok? It seems to make her feel better. Also this food we are feeding is what we found agrees with her. She is now 5 years old. Any help would be very greatful. She isn't going to live much longer but I have to keep her around as long as possible. I love her!

I've had Danes all my life, and the oldest dane I had was 10 when he passed on, so 5 may seem old, but Danes can live up to 14! They also tend to have sensitive stomachs, and most dog food brands sold in the grocery stores are NOT good for Danes. Purina, Pedigree, those are the WORST for a Dane.

Now, I would recommend switching her food (if she isn't already on Solid Gold, Chicken Soup or Eagle Brand), gradually to a brand called Eagle Pack Giant Breed, Holistic Formula. It's formulated for Great Danes and giant breed dogs with sensitive stomachs. When you feed her, make sure to wet the food down with hot water, so that it absorbs the water and the kibbles are soft, it helps their digestion. Also, make sure that the calcium you give her has vitamin D otherwise that can make her tummy upset as well. Good luck, and feel free to email me with any questions!

Everyone has excellent advice, but my Danes, only 1 had a stomach problems, along with my Belgium Shepherd. This might be expensive, (not where I live though) but I fed them lamb and rice. Real lamb that I cooked and gave to my precious Lupo and Buc Due. The stomach problems ceased, but then I had to try different dog foods that they liked. Lupo my Belgium lived 14 years, Buc Due, my beautiful Dane lived great fully everyday, but was put down for a different reason than his stomach. Danes often have problems I think other than the digestive system, My Buc due had a heart, (after the cardiology exam)that was 3 times bigger than it should be. He was only 4, but the intensity of his presence will live on in me. Sorry to be so drab, but I think, knowing background about the pets we have will (would have) keep them around forever...

Don't give calcium pills to a Dane. They can cause some serious problems with their joints.

What are you feeding her? If you are feeding a food with corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, by products don't these only create issues and/or make existing ones worse.

Look for a simple food that only has one or two grains such as rice or oatmeal and only one meat source such as chicken or lamb. You might also try a food that has venison or rabbit instead of conventional meats. The simple the ingredients the easier it is to digest.

You said she isn't going to live much longer...does she have other medical issues?

The other posters have given excellent advice. If you need another kind of food I would recommend something called Canine Gastro formula; it's available through your vet and is especially designed for dogs with sensitive tummies.

Calcium without Vit D doesn't dissolve in the stomach and will not even make it in to the blood stream. It is hard to digest and could be your problem. Call and ask vet.

When my Pitbull gets an upset stomach I will just feed him plain white rice for a couple of days and then mix in his dog food. He really likes it and my aunt gave be the idea when her dog was in her last days.

Why don't you consult a vet. They have medications that they can put the dog on for stomach problems.
