A Book is always good, specially if she loves to read. Although women like clothes, sometimes they don't like clothing as gifts, maybe because they have a different taste in clothing. So, I suggest something a woman can use like a purse or bag. You can also burn a compilation CD of her favorite songs. I recommend all of these, just take your pick. :)

A gift certificate to somewhere you know she likes to shop - just make sure the dollar amount goes with your financial means. For example, if you're a college student on a tight budget, under $20 makes sense. If you a college student who is also a rich trust fund kid - and she knows it - then $100 may be more appropriate.

In your conversations, by now, you should have picked up on some of her interests and likes ... the environment, animals (Is she a cat person or a dog person? Like wildlife?), cartoon character, cooking, sports/team, NASCAR, her chosen profession, gardening, flowers, arts and crafts, needlework, word or number games/puzzles, etc. Does she like a particular city or country?

Pick one of her favorites, and get her a book or calendar (or both!) on that subject. It shows that you put some special thought into the gift, but it is not too intimate or too personal.

I think books are a great way to go. Give her a book that you've read that you really enjoy. And if it's someone you want to spend more time with, you can arrange to discuss the book over lunch after.

You should get your friend something based off her personality or something you noticed her being fond of. For example if she is into wine you can give her a bottle of wine or a book about wines or a cheese and/or fruit basket. Whatever it is let it be genuine and catered to her.

How about a pair of silver earrings--they're relatively inexpensive, but still personal.
