I know at six weeks and so on they need a shot. But I feel like I should be preparing to do something else. My dog stays outside in a gated home and has a dog house so I know they'll be in there. I was also told to start giving my dog milk.

Dogs are pregnant for right at two months. When your dog begins to get big from the pregnancy, begin giving her a high quality puppy food. The extra supplements found in the food will boost her milk supply and will provide her with the extra calories she needs for her developing pups.
You should watch her when she is nearing the end of the pregnancy for signs of labor. Often a dog will pant, even if it's cold outside, and she will begin "nesting", which is rooting around and digging at the spot where she plans to have the pups. Most dogs have their pups in the evening, so be vigilent and check on the momma dog often as the due date nears. You'll want to be with her as she has the pups if it is possible for you to do so in case any problems arise. Make sure you have lots of old towels on hand to help clean the pups off with after they're born. If the momma dog seems reluctant to clean her pup up you must not delay in assistance. Some dogs just don't have a strong maternal instinct. If it is neccesary for you to cut the cord, use dental floss to tie off the cord and use clean scissors to snip it one inch from the body.
Because the weather has been getting colder, for the safety of the pups, you will need to provide a heat source for the first few weeks since the pups are unable to regulate their own body temp when they are born. Hypothermia is the largest cause of all puppy deaths. Continue to provide the momma dog with the puppy food that she was eating before the pups were born.
The pups will eventually need their shots. The first dose is at 6 weeks, then again every two or three weeks until 12 weeks old. After that, they will require a booster shot once a year.
I will include a few websites that might be able to give you more detailed info.

Also, don't be too sure the dog will have the pups in the dog house. It's suprising how many different places a dog can find to have her puppies, even in a seemingly "empty" yard.

Your question is, "What should I do after they are born", and my answer to this question is "Get your dog fixed, call the rescue group and let them know that you, a BYB, created more puppies and that they'll eventually be showing up there. Then, make a LARGE monetary donation to either that breed rescue group or a no-kill shelter in the area to try and make up for your bringing more BYB puppies into this world."

Why didn't you gather this information before you bred your dog? If it was an accident, why wasn't your dog fixed if you were going to allow her access to unaltered males?

Honestly, the fact that you are leaving a pregnant female outside during winter disgusts me. As does your assumption that the puppies will be had in the dog house. Even if they are, are you going to leave them out there to freeze? What if she has them behind a tree? Or in a hole in the ground? Or on your back porch?

I'm also disgusted that you would allow your dog to have puppies without even knowing that adult dogs are typically lactose intolerant; that you think the solution to her having a healthy pregnancy is cow milk. Who told you this? Another BYB?

Right now, you need to contact a responsible breeder and use them as a mentor. Ask *them* for advice and help, rather than use a non-dog website that roughly 75% children, morons, and the ethically challenged. While I honestly hope that you find that information, for the sake of your dog and future puppies, I can't say that I wish *you* luck. You've completely disregarded the AKC guidelines for breeders and most likely your breed club's as well. I just don't have any tolerance for BYBs like this.

First of all, you are an idiot for allowing your dog to get pregnant when there are so many homeless pets already out there. Only licensed breeders should be having litters and selling them. And even most of them should not be doing it.

They need to be checked by a vet, getting their series of DHLPPV vaccines and then rabies. You need to find GOOD HOMES for them, it is your responsibility since you were idiotic enough to let your dog get pregnant.

Spay the mother so that this does not happen again. It is morons like you who are responsible for the millions of unwanted dogs in this country.

Call your vet and ask them.

Unfortunately, you don't sound like you should have let your dog have puppies. Puppies should be raised INSIDE the home (especially since it's winter in the USA). You should have also picked up a book on raising puppies and not asking on some Yahoo board.

Don't give your dog milk!! Give her vitamins.

Just how warm is it outside where those pups are going to be living? They need to be kept in the warmth as they get chilled very easily.

When you take your dog to the vet for her check-up, get advice on how to look after her litter. You should also have her spayed for her health and to prevent more pups you don't know how to look after.

Get her fixed
And i hope you find good homes for the puppy's and they don't end up in the Humane Society and put down because no one wants them

If you don't know what you should be doing you shouldn't be breeding. Why don't you do research before making a decision such as breeding?

Also, the puppies should not born and left in a doghouse. What if there is a problem?

Why do people like you breed???

Unbelievable.........................
