I read on the internet that soldiers in Afghanistan are using specially trained dogs for bomb disposal work.

How does the dog manage to defuse the bomb ?

K-9's in Afghanistan are used to clear the Soviet minefields put in place during the Soviet war against the Mujaheddin in Afghanistan in the 1980's. The USSR left 11 million landmines in Afghanistan, surrounding all of the bases and in between mountains.

The way this works is combat engineers cut grids by hand, using a mine detector. they are about 10 meters by 10 meters. After this grid is made, mine dogs (explosive sniffing dogs) are brought in to find traces of explosives in the ground. When they get a hit the dog sits and the spot is marked so the Engineers can dispose of the threat. Along with mines there are a lot of UXO's (Unexploded ordinance) or (bombs) in and on the ground that the dogs search for.

The US Military will rarely defuse any explosive device. The main machine is the AARDVARK, this is a looks like a tank, on the front it has hundreds of chains that hit the ground with about 2 tons of pressure.

Mines and UXO's are dangerous, especially for children who think they are toys to play with.

Dogs do not diffuse bombs. That is just another one of those things for which opposable thumbs really, really help. Dogs are, on the other hand, really good at finding bombs/mines/explosive residue.

Not only dogs are trained to locate bombs, but they are now developing strains of honey bees to detect them as well and they can get into smaller places (drugs as well)
