Yes you can!
First, go buy some ez liquid sander stuff from your home improvement store. All you have to do is put it on a rag and scrub the walls with it, make sure the walls are not glossy anymore.
Next thing, put as many coats of primer as needed so you can't see the color of the paneling anymore.
Paint it just like a regular wall.
Believe it or not it will look good...I was very scared before I did it. If you want to get really creative you can even fill in the mold lines but you won't notice them very much when it's all uniform color.

I painted mine which was in my summer mobile home.It looks wonderful. Give it a light sanding first and then use a good primer before you put the paint on.I used latex paint with an eggshell finish (not shiny) as I figured that wouldn't show as many blemishes and lines where the panelling is joined.I painted a very light grey and it looks great. Go ahead. You'll be happy with it.

fake wood paneling as you refer to it is probably 3/16 mobile paneling and yes you can paint it.
Just etch it 1st with TSP, let dry and paint a coat of primer then a coat of your color of choice.
keep your primers a shade lighter than your finish color. You can see where you've painted and the top coat is highlighted with the primer color

Yes, but you should primer it first and it may take 2-3 coats to cover. I did this in my kitchen and it turned out fine.

Yes, but it's best to paint it with a sealer first so the paint sticks better.
