short term maybe, long term no. Problem is that trauma or unhappiness will have their day and insist you deal with them at some point in time. I would support an argument that says immediately after something you need to to have a breathing space before you take things on but you will have to deal with things sooner or later so don't leave it too long. Talk to someone, surgery is never an answer to psychological issues you will be able to work through things if you talk. Whatever has happened to you, other people have had to deal with things as bad and have managed it. Not easy but if you want to read the authentic voice of victims, read Susan Forwards book 'Toxic Parents' not necessarily for the stuff about parents but for the people whise voices you can hear who have been there and Triumphed. You can too, Good Luck

Your brain can block traumatic memories to heal itself and prevent you from hurting and it can numb the pain of certain experiences also for self preservation. Certain illnesses can make you forgetful or can result in you have no memory of certain events, situations or blocks of time and despite not wanting surgery as an answer, serious surgery such as on the brain can alter your memories and even your personality.
If you are actually wanting to block something from your memory then I am not sure I can help there. You could try not thinking about it, if you catch yourself thinking of it immediately think of something else and push that thought away, some people try the technique of locking harmful or distressing memories into mental boxes in their mind so they never think about it. Some people could try hypnosis if they believe in that field whereby they can be programmed to forget something. Some people would try counselling to resolve an issue or talk through something unpleasant so that they just never think about it again.
Not sure if this is the type of answer you were looking for but hope it helps anyway.

Yes there is Memory Decay a natural Psychological process and Repression which is the involuntary pushing of bad or upsetting information and memory's into the subconscious. I don't believe that you can lose any information like this voluntary except for just blocking git out. Hope that helps.

Technically no- your brain remembers things by creating connections within your brain. When you try to recall the information, the connection is triggered. Therefore, you can never remove that connection-- everything you have ever seen, heard or witnessed is in you brain forever. However, you brain will block out certain events that cause pain, and often these events can only be accessed through hypnosis.

If it is something you want to forget then no, probably not. People who had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder try, and that is what keeps the problems around. You will have to deal with the memory, confront it. If you try to hide from it, it will get worse. If you use medicine or drugs to try to forget, it will get much worse. My advice would be to seek a licensed therapist to help with the memory. If you try to hide from it, it will become consuming.

I don't know that you can chose to forget an event although the best way to forget something that happened is to not care about it then you won't deem it important enough to remember.
Sometimes if for example I have a really crap night out and someone's been horrible to me, in my mind I replay it but change aspects of it to make it not so bad - hope that makes sense, seems works for me.

You cannot control your memory but you can do a better thing. To be satisfied with whatever happened to you. This is to believe that whatever happened is a fate that would happen in all cases.
Prophet Muhammed once said: " And if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don’t say: ‘If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so’, but say: ‘Allah did that what He had ordained to do.’ And your “if” opens the (gate for the) Satan.” and in another Hadith he said: "Strange is the affair of the believer. Verily, all his affairs are good for him. If something pleasing befalls him he thanks (Allah) and it becomes better for him. And if something harmful befalls him he is patient and it becomes better for him. And this is only for the believer."
So the only thing you can do is to accept whatever happened and be convinced that this is the will of God, and thank Him that matters weren' worse than that. Only believers can do this perfectly.

One can suppress memories, but they usually has a nasty habit of surfacing at inopportune moments in life.
Wouldn't it be better for a person to somehow come to terms with what occurred, and from there be able to move on?
