Inflammation and/or infection of the pharyngeal tonsils. We have 3 pairs of tonsils in the head and any of them can become infected but "tonsillitis" (also spelled tonsilitis) refers to the pharyngeal tonsils.

It is an infection of your tonsils. Anything with itis attached to a word, refers to "infection."
Example:
appendicITIS.
SinusITIS.
I hope this helps. If you have tonsillitis, see your doctor because infections need antibiotics. Viruses do not.

here's a big hint for you:
"itis" means "inflammation of."
appendicitis = inflammed appendix
gastritis = inflammed stomach
sinusitis = inflammed sinuses
tendonitis = inflammed tendon
you get it, right?
