I have used the selection tool elipse in Gimp, but it just won't crop to that shape... seems to only crop to a rectangle shape. Any clue what the steps are to make it an elipse shape? I want to put an elipse shaped picture into a word document and have text wrap around the oval shape.

Get the eliptical selection you want, then, use the Script-Fu menu --> Selection --> Fade Outline.

Then save as a GIF to get the transparency effect. You can then import into Word as a picture. Format the picture layout as Tight.

you can do that in word without gimp. just insert an oval from your drawing toolbar. Then right click and select format autoshape then go to the fill and select fill effects. then select the picture tab and browse for the pic you want. if it comes out skewed you just have to go change the size/crop the picture file. and use the text wrap feature for the writing.

Draw your Oval shape in a layer above the photo. Then use CTRL+G. That will make the masking layer. Then you can save it cropped, or flatten it and do whatever else you're trying to do with it.
