Feel lucky CA...in AR sales tax is on goods and services...I even pay 10% sales tax on my electric, gas, phone and water bills.

The prior answers are correct except where you have contracted for both goods and services but the seller did not break out the cost of the services. For example, if you buy a new range from Sears and they charge you $500 for the stove, installation included, it is all subject to Cal sales tax. If the bill says $400 for the range and $100 for the installation services, the $100 should be free of sales tax.

Installation and repair labor are exempt. Fabrication labor is taxable.

Disagree with the stove example. I doubt the BOE will accept wheeling an appliance into a house and plugging it in as "installation".

No, labor is non-taxable, merchadise are.
