I would say study a few breeds as some are better suited for your lifestyle then others. For example, if you get a Jack Russell Terrier and don't give it enough exercise and things to do, it will find trouble. Long-haired dogs require more grooming...
A lot of people are going to tell you to get whatever dog they have becasue their's is the best. Well that may be so for their lifestyle. Do your research.
When you decide which breeds you like, then go to www.petfinder.com or your local shelter and see if you can find someone. Chances are someone will pick you out and you will have no say but to take it home :)

As long as you are living at home you are not 'independent.' And Mommy is still there to cook, clean & do laundry for you. Pretty nice deal you & your sibs have got going for you. Give some thought to your mother - although she may say she wants you there don't you think that after all these years your mother deserves a rest. Not only are you not independent but a girl/woman couldn't be blamed for thinking that she will be competing with Mom for your love and attention. I would question whether or not, once married (if you ever get that far) you would make your wife #1 - where she belongs. And that you would always stick up for her when there is a diff of opinion between your wife & mother. I guess to sum it up I would think that you haven't really grown up & don't really want a life independent of your family. Also the fact that you still live with your family certainly cuts down on any romance, doesn't it?

i saw a quiz where that you can take to see some breeds that would be best for you. i forgot what the site was though. maybe you can google for it.
anyways i think a shih tzu might be good for you. there are a few problems though. they require daily brushing to keep their hair from knotting up. you could always get the dog a puppy cut though. also, theyre sensitive to heat. "This is why airlines that ship dogs will not accept them for shipment when temperatures at any point on the planned itinerary exceeds 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24°C)." so i don't think traveling with one would be a very good idea. but you can research that more if you decide to maybe get one. i have a shih tzu but we never have to travel so i wouldnt know. anyways :) they're adorable, extremely affectionate, and friendly to the point that they'll melt anyones heart. they get along very well with other animals and people (children too). i think they'd be great around the kids but because the shih tzu is tiny you'll wanna keep an eye on the kids to make sure they aren't too rough with the puppy. i've never known any shih tzu to snap. but from what i've read they're not good choices if you have babies or toddlers. i can't speak from experience on that because i've only known people with older children that have them. shih tzus do love attention though but i guess if you really decide on one you could work around that.
oh and they're really really hyper so i don't know how well that would do when you're at work. i only know one person with a shih tzu that isn't home all day with the dog and his dog seems fine. but it really depends on how many hours you work. if you give the dog toys it should be fine. they love to entertain themselves. they get plenty of exercising from all the playing they do inside so you won't have to walk it a lot. but i'd still definitely give it a walk at least once a day cause dogs love walks.. shih tzus love to cuddle.
good luck.

I think you need a Yorkshire Terrier! Yorkies are great little lap dogs. They're lovable and playful. Basically they're perfect dogs in my eyes. They also can go pretty much anywhere. I have a little carrying case for my Yorkie and he comes with me pretty much wherever I go. He's even allowed to come with me on planes. Also most people are not allergic to Yorkies because of the type of hair they. My Yorkie's only going to get up to 5 pounds, but they can get up to ten pounds at the most, so you can definitely hold them as an adult. Yorkie's are great and very smart. They are hard to potty trai, but they're so small that when they do go to the bathroom, it takes seconds to clean up.
So, I think I've done enough explaining, but you should definitely look into Yorkies, maybe do some research, because they are well worth looking into!

Get a chihuaua. They're very loyal and will bark if something moves! You can usually get them for about $300 in the newspaper too! Good luck!

www.petfinder.com. I wouldn't suggest a puppy since you're at work all day. Probably age 1 or older.
