I have a American oil portait that is pre-civil war. I am having a tough time finding an appraiser....any ideas?

go to a local museum, maybe call them before you show up with it, and try to set up an appointment with someone in the department that best suits the piece.

in the meantime check ebay and watch antiques roadshow

Take it to a professional assessor - look in your phone book or ask at a local art museum.

Is there a signature? You can look up auction records by artist on http://www.findartinfo.com. Artprice.com is better, but it has a monthly subscription fee.
