Too easy, optical is best with a wider angle lens to capture more of a image. Optical bends light, much like a telescope and focuses it onto the picture recorder chip or film. Digital Zoom simple takes the central point and streaches the image out reducing the quality.

Optical zoom is what you want. Digital zoom tends to make the picture fuzzy. If you have the money, get an SLR Digital. You can shoot really high res and use all kinds of lenses for closeup and distance.

Definitely optical. Optical is like using a telescope to zoom in, while digital only "zooms in" on a regular picture, making it blurry.
That's why the "Optical" ones cost so much more.
