Black is the shade of things that do not reflect light of any parts of the visible spectrum.

Strictly speaking, black is NOT a color. More accurately, black contains all the colors of the visible spectrum, and sometimes is described as an "achromatic color".

When I took Art and Color back in college, I was told that black is a shade....

Black is a tint, as is white. Added to a color, black tints it darker.

When one adds the complementary color to another color, one tones it.

If you are talking about black as 'paint', it is a combination of red and blue...at the right mixture. Logically, black IS a color...
